Luckily for Dick, the newly installed coffee machine was right next to the bar. In a ‘lightbulb ‘ moment he combined freshly brewed Espresso with Vodka and the Espresso Martini was born!

Legend has it that a Puerto Rican pirate used bottles of this white rum, coconut and pineapple perfection to keep his crew happy. But the recipe was lost with his death in 1825. Until more recently (and less piratey), the Caribe Hilton Hotel said that its bartender Ramón “Monchito” Marrero created the first one in 1954. Few cocktails symbolise a city like the Cosmopolitan. But even though this iconic pink drink screams New York City, it’s been evolving all over the world for more than a century. When pre-war vodka tasted absolutely horrendous on its own, lime juice was added to make the Vodka Gimlet. Years later, triple sec joined the mix, and it became the Kamikaze. But it was only in 1988 that bartender Toby Cecchini from Tribeca’s famous Odeon bistro added cranberry juice, creating “the” drink of New York. And we’ve stayed true to his modern Manhattan masterpiece (Mmm for short).
